FWIW, I've found that in order to get WindowsUpdate to work on Windows
XP behind a proxy (maybe you're running one?) you need to do:

proxycfg -u

with your proxy information in IE's settings.

I've also heard that turning off Automatic Updates allows WU to work
behind a proxy.
