Hi,
A Dutch judge just sentenced two guys to 2 years and 1.5 years
imprisonment. According to the judge it has been proven that the two
wrote and spreaded the ToxBot bot, to build a botnet (1,5M systems)
trying to extort US companies. With another trojan they stole
creditcard numbers and other forms of paymentinfo. They used the
financial gain to buy luxury goods. The judge concluded that the 2
men committed a serious attack against the increasing economy and
interest of the internet. "It is not an exciting story or innocent
prank. You have, as intelligent young men, misused your knowledge".
The leader of the group got 2 years imprisonment and a fine of 9000
euro, plus the profit he made, nearly 17,000 euro. The second got 1.5
years inprisonment and a fine of 4,000 euro. He will have to pay the
profit back as well, being 2,500 euro. Four other members of the
group will be trialed later.
